Watch Out! No Kids Helmet On!

In order for our kids to grow healthy, they need to get used to doing physical activity constantly. Whenever the weather and time allow it, you should take your children out or encourage them to do some physical exercise with their friends. They can go swimming, play football, basketball or go riding. However, if they choose to go riding, you should make sure they don’t leave the house on their bike without having the kids helmet on.

Statistics have shown that there are more than 300000 accidents involving bicyclists every year, which is quite worrying. As kids can suffer serious head injuries when involved in bicycle accidents, child cycle helmets are very important, being the only things capable of protecting them from serious trauma or even from death as head injuries can lead to brain injuries.

In the United States of America, the government has issued safety standards for helmets, each kids helmet having to be labeled as meeting the standards issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Once the helmet has been labeled, kids need to learn how to wear it properly, even if they don’t take a very long ride and they think they don’t need to wear it.

The helmets shouldn’t be bigger or smaller and children should never wear anything else under their helmets. As far as their position is concerned, the kids helmet should cover kids’ forehead and they should always fasten the straps in such a way that the helmets don’t move around and that they can’t be pulled. Also, the helmets should always be protected because once they suffer any damage they won’t provide the necessary protection in case an accident occurs.

Most of the kids helmet models nowadays are very light and come in all kinds of colours. If those colours don’t work with your child, they should change it or personalize their helmets using reflective stickers, for instance. These reflective stickers are very useful when riding in traffic, just like bicyclists should wear fluorescent jackets or bars on their equipment in order to be seen in traffic and to be avoided by drivers if necessary.

Helmets should be the right size just like bicycles should be the right size in order to be perfectly safe all the time. Once kids have put on their protective equipment, checked their tires, seat, wheels and handlebars, the chain, the brakes, measured the right distance from the ground and the right position reported to the top bar, they can start riding their bikes, watching out in traffic if the case and riding safe.

All in all, whenever your kids decide to go riding their bikes, make sure they don’t forget or trick you into not putting their kids helmet on. Remember that with those helmets on, the risk of them getting seriously injured in case of an accident is much lower.
